The bergamot orange, or ‘citrus bergamia’ is a fruit grown in the Calabrian region of Italy. The fragrant zesty fruit is prized for its unique flavour profile while delicately blending floral notes with juicy citrus. Thought to be a hybrid of lemon and bitter orange it lends itself to being used in creamy based desserts such as panna cottas and parfaits, particularly throughout the Mediterranean region.
The fruit lends itself to be paired with flavourings to help compliment the rich creaminess such as sparkling wine, mint, pistachios and sharp tropical passionfruit. Alternatively, pair with lemongrass, ginger, chamomile or a variety of citrus fruits such as lemon, yuzu, kumquat, grapefruit – perfect for flavoured gins.
